The ISM has voted to add the following language to the sample meeting script after the section about sponsorship and outreach calls: “A note for those who are new to ITAA: Thirteenth stepping is manipulating another person in recovery, especially a newcomer, into a sexual or romantic relationship. This behavior is inappropriate and wholeheartedly discouraged in ITAA.” The purpose of this language is to help ensure ITAA remains a safe space for everybody to find recovery. Groups who wish to incorporate this language into their scrips are encouraged to hold group consciences.

In Twelve Step programs, “Thirteenth Stepping” refers to the pursuit of a romantic or sexual relationship with a newcomer who has been in recovery for less than one year and/or doesn’t have stable sobriety. Such predatory behavior is extremely inappropriate and a violation of the safety and integrity of our community which is wholly focused on our primary purpose of helping the compulsive internet and technology user who still suffers. There have been recent instances of thirteenth stepping, and at our upcoming ISM we will discuss strategies for better protecting our fellowship. We encourage newcomers to avoid working with sponsors or developing outreach call relationships with members with whom we may develop sexual or romantic attraction, and to clearly communicate your boundaries if a relationship begins to feel inappropriate. If you feel you are the recipient of inappropriate or unwanted sexual or romantic attention, please speak with a member you trust—anonymity and confidentiality are not cloaks for inappropriate behavior. You can also refer to our guide to safety in ITAA (https://internetaddictsanonymous.org/safety-in-itaa/) for further support.

ITAA is growing rapidly and every day newcomers are finding help with their compulsive technology use through our fellowship. We now have nearly 150 online and in-person meetings, connecting thousands of members from around the world. In keeping with the 7th tradition, we are fully self-supporting and rely entirely on donations from members. In the past month, we received contributions from only 102 individuals. If you have found ITAA beneficial in your recovery, we ask that you consider setting up a recurring monthly contribution to help our fellowship continue to operate effectively. Any amount helps, and we are truly grateful for your participation as we carry the message to internet and technology addicts who still suffer. Thank you! https://internetaddictsanonymous.org/donate/
